Liam Ball

Derry swimmer Liam Ball represented Ireland at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics in Mexico and Munich. He died in 1984 at age 33 and is remembered on the wall of local heroes at Creggan shops. There are five other portraits – of James McLean, Tony O’Doherty, David McAuley, Charlie Nash, and Aileen Reid – painted by Karl Porter and Donal O’Doherty from UV Arts.

Just People

Here is a selection of posters from throughout the past year (2017) from Belfast and London-/Derry. Above is an Anarchists In Ireland poster welcoming refugees, while the second image is of a passenger and parcel service to Romania from Dublin. The others are for republican marches and causes.

IRPWA is the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association (web | Fb | tw), a body working to support republican prisoners and their families in Maghaberry, Portlaoise, and Hydebank. Hanging Tower

Derry Gaol was built in 1791 with towers added in 1824, including the one shown above for executions by hanging. The rest of the prison was demolished in 1973; this tower lives on as a small WWI museum. For more info, see Rambling Wombat.

Unfinished Business

The “Unfinished revolution – unfinished business” board at the top of Westland Street (featured in a 2016 post) has been updated in various ways: the year has been changed to “2017” and “Join the IRA” added in stencil. Around the board “IRA” and “Smash Stormont” graffiti has been added.
