IRPC

The Irish Republican Prisoners Committee (IRPC) is currently without any web or social-media presence, but it recently mounted this board in Northumberland Street, Belfast. As with all post-Agreement murals for republican prisoners, it uses only barbed wire and not the lark.

Behind Bars

IRPWA is the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association (web | Fb | tw), a body working to support republican prisoners and their families in Maghaberry, Portlaoise, and Hydebank. Barbed wire has long been the symbol of political prisoners, both republican (1981) and loyalist (1988). Previously in this series of boards: éistigí | Sniper At Work | IRA | Beir Bua |

The Silence Of Our Friends

Martin Luther King is used to support the end of “complicity” in the practice of internment: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” The quote comes from King’s Steeler lecture entitled “The Trumpet of Conscience” (which was also used as the title of a 1968 collection of lectures). The Marwan Barghouti board (in Belfast) was featured previously. Both boards are from the IRPWA (Fb | web | tw).

Watch Your Back

02860-2015-08-26-internmentspeakout
Two republican boards at the Eastway roundabout on the eastern side of Creggan estate. The upper board shows an IRA volunteer with RPG-luancher – “Welcome to Creggan. Watch your back on the way out.” – the other is an IRPWA board urging people to speak out against internment of republicans in Maghaberry, Portlaoise, and Hydebank.

Know Evil

03620-2016-07-03-see-hear-speak
Instead of three monkeys, this IRPWA board in London-/Derry/Doire shows three skeletons in denial of the ‘strip searching’, ‘controlled movement’ and ‘internment’ happening at HM Prison Maghaberry (with an enlarged “H” to make an association with Long Kesh/Maze).

No Excuse

03776-2016-08-20-interned-159-days
As a comparison of the first and third images – taken six weeks apart – show, a count of the days in prison has been added to the Tony Taylor board on the green in front of the H-Block memorial in London-/Derry, reminiscent of the counts that were kept of the hunger strikers in 1981 (see, for example, Day 55 | Day 61 on the Peter Moloney Collection blog).

End Internment – Free Tony Taylor

03470-2016-05-17-tony-taylor-black
Tony Taylor, an RNU leader and former IRA man in Derry, remains in Maghaberry prison after having his license revoked in March of this year. (See Free Tony Taylor.) Sinn Féin last week again called for Taylor’s immediate release of Tony Taylor. (youtube) The Cogús mural above is in Beechmount Avenue.
