The Freedom Of Others

“To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” (Nelson Mandela) Nobel peace prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi’s portrait has been x-ed out on the Frederick Douglass mural on Northumberland Street, in protest at her failure to speak out, from her position as Myanmar’s State Counsellor, against the persecution of the Muslim Rohingya population by the Myanmar military. For images of the full mural, see As I Would Not Be A Slave, So I Would Not Be A Master.
