A Bird’s Eye View

Buildings go up, buildings come down, buildings go up again. And in the meantime, gulls and taggers leave their marks.

Up

Work is well under way on the main floors of a new 12-storey student accommodation that will tower over the houses in Stephen Street (in the middle-ground of today’s images); the construction involves Lacuna Developments, Farrans Construction, and Plantavi and is due to be completed in spring 2023. For a timeline of the development, see SkyScraperCity.

The plot along Carrick Hill remains vacant – see Dense for the board (in the second image) calling for traditional family housing.

Builders At Work

This Nathan Bowen (ig | web store) piece is on the hoarding on the west side of North Street (in front of the car-park). There is no actual construction taking place – the area has been in decline since the fire in the arcade in 2004 (see below and Condensed Community Confidence and Who Burnt Us Out?) and the Tribeca renovation has proven controversial.

Armed With Taste

“Lovable lefty football fans” and brandishers of beer and spirits TUFAC (web | Fb | tw) were at the Sunflower last Friday and in the days that followed pasted a sticker or two around the city centre. This ‘refugees welcome‘ one shows the iconic ‘fleeing family’ dribbling a soccer ball as they go.

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

JJB Sports is still closed (since 2012) and the Weatherspoons never materialised, so Leo Boyd’s (web | ig | Fb) art on the hoarding has expanded into a triptych with pieces on either side of No Signal. In June he added the piece on the right (shown below), and now on the left (shown above, with signature) is one in a series called “Are You Sitting Comfortably?” The Vault’s Christmas market is on this weekend at HQ on the Newtownards Road – tickets can be booked on Fb.
