South East Antrim Remembers

This new South East Antrim 2nd battalion UDA/UFF mural in Glengormley prominently uses poppies, usually seen in UVF murals on account of their shared name with the Ulster Volunteers of 1912 and WWI. Replaces They Live With Us.

The Burning Issue

04057-2017-03-01-end-corruption-rhi

Not a phoenix or a bonfire but a pile of sterling going up in flames, a reference to the recent RHI (“Renewable Heat Incentive” rather than Sinn Féin’s promised “Respect, honesty, integrity”) scandal which was a cause of yesterday’s election. Whether it will make any difference to the electorate will be seen today, as counting gets under way in the 2017 Assembly Elections.

The Ulster Volunteers

03567 2016-06-25 Ballyearl Somme m+

After a year without any change, work appears to have stopped on this UVF mural in Ballyearl. It links together the Ulster Volunteers of the first world war (shown on the left of the wall, with a Victoria Cross, Carson and the covenant, and a cross on the battlefield of Flanders) and the modern UVF (represented by a hooded gunman with rifle brought to bear, and the Nissen huts of Long Kesh. An orange lily and red poppy complete the tableau.

Carnmoney Remembers

03437 2016-05-04 Carnmoney Remembers d+

This is a new Somme centenary mural in Carnmoney/Ballyduff, in memorial of the First World War and 1916 in particular. It also serves as a memorial to members of the Pride of the Hill flute band, David Lee and Kris Muckle. (It’s not clear what “Vivete in somnio” means – neither “vivete” nor “somnio” are Latin; “vivete” is Italian but “somnio” is not. Get in touch/leave a comment if you know what is intended.)

For images of Saturday’s launch, see the POTH Facebook page.

For a little information about Lee and Muckle, see the post on the previous mural in this location: Absent Friends.

Dignity And Pride

03379 2016-04-13 Quail Caldwell w+

The UVF mural dedicated to Colin Caldwell on Derry Hill in Rathcoole has been repainted and a mention added of “Marky” Mark Quail — who has a separate mural a short distance away — added on a (painted) ribbon. The mural shows two hooded volunteers — from the 3rd [north] Belfast battalion and 1st east Antrim battalion – aiming rifles; the previous mural (X00512) showed volunteers mourning beside a memorial stone. “We salute all volunteers at home and on the mainland who served with dignity and pride.”

Ulster’s Fighting Men

03282 2016-02-26 Ulsters Fighting Men+

This new mural in Ballyduff commemorates the sacrifice of the Ulster Volunteers and Young Citizen Volunteers who fought in WWI and in particular their action in 1916; 2016 is the centenary of the Battle Of The Somme. The flag of (modern) UVF 1st East Antrim battalion flies on either side of the mural.

The Blood Of Heroes Never Dies

03236 2015-12-30 We Cherish Too mid+

Five images of a new, multi-wall, mural in Ballyduff. The main panel shows WWI soldiers bowed over graves in Flanders surrounded by poppies. This is accompanied by the red-hand emblem of the Ulster Volunteers and the shamrock of the YCV.

On a side wall (see the fourth image) is a verse from American professor Moina Michael’s poem We Shall Keep The Faith: “We cherish too the poppy red that grows in fields where valour led; it seems to signal to the skies the blood of heroes never dies”. It was Michael who began to raise funds for servicemen by selling (silk) poppies, also adopted by the British Legion in 1921 (WP).

If Needed, We Shall Rise Again

03228 2015-12-26 1stEA Purple+

The years of operation of the UVF in this new Ballyduff mural are given as 1966-1994. The main loyalist paramilitaries began what was to be a lasting ceasefire on 13th of October, 1994. The ceasefire was announced by Gusty Spence, who was the organisation’s original leader in 1966.

“Present peace now, stills our hand, death no longer stalks our land, our weapons are silent, and shall remain, but if needed, we shall rise again.”
