Laid Off, Rehired, Furloughed, Fired

Two posters from Unite: “My rent payments aren’t getting cut – why are my wages?” “Hospitality workers demand respect”. The pandemic’s economic impact is felt most acutely among those in high-contact (and non-frontline) occupations, such as clubs and pubs.

Whitewell Supports Fiona

Noah Donahoe, whose body was found on June 27th after six days missing, is drawn as an angel at the bottom of the Serpentine Road, north Belfast. The current line of enquiry in the search for an explanation for how he ended up in a storm drain involves a possible assault in the city centre, somewhere between the art college and Yorkgate (Belfast Live).

Stronger, More United

The Shankill Road pays to tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised more than 30 million pounds for the NHS, after his death on February 2nd, with a tarpaulin on the fence of the community garden. The flowers are from current Belfast mayor, Frank McCoubrey of the DUP. Elsewhere, Sinn Féin members of Fermanagh & Omagh council did not join their colleagues in expressing condolences (Impartial Reporter).

Different Wars, Always Heroes

“Different wars, always heroes.” This mural in Belvoir estate shows Captain Tom Moore, who served in the British Army in Indian and Burma/Myanmar during WWII but became a household name last year for raising more than 30 million pounds for the NHS by doing 100 laps of his garden, being knighted in July on the occasion of his 100th birthday. The Glorious Dead

Four of the 700 NHS staff in the UK to die of Covid during the pandemic have come Northern Ireland, the most recent being dementia specialist Alan Henry in Antrim hospital (Express | BelTel | iTV). In the south, Defence Forces have been deployed to three nursing homes while 6,400 health workers are off sick (Irish Times). The mural above shows a masked nurse and doctor among a field of poppies. Road Sign

Speed limits in Northern Ireland are set by the Department Of Infrastructure/An Roinn Bonneagair after consideration of all relevant factors. The residents of Tern Street, Belfast, have instead used a decades-old mode of public communication – wall painting – to ask motorists to slow down around the sharp turn just off Dee Street.

Good Night, White Pride

Good night, white pride” is an anti-fascist slogan/meme (and Loikaemie song) endorsed by antifa and the “ultra” fan club of FC St Pauli: “In Hamburg nur wir! Auf zum derby!” [Only us in Hamburg. Off to the derby [with Hamburger SV]]. The lobster is perhaps an appropriation of Jordan Peterson’s use of the lobster as an analogy supporting natural social hierarchies. Get in touch if you can explain.
