Till Labour Knows No Master

2013-10-06 ICTUWide+

“There can be no dignity in labour, till labour knows no master.” The statue of Jim Larkin in Donegall Street Place has been augmented with a massive mural celebrating the many unions which have membership in Ireland. 2013 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Dublin lock-out, which ran from August 1913 to January 1914. The images below show a close-up of the statue (which was previously featured sporting a placard), three female figures in the border to the right of Larkin (Winifred Carney, Inez McCormack, and Betty Sinclair?) and finally, the plans for the piece, which were hanging on the left-hand wall prior to completion.

No Grabbers Here

A sign in Crossmaglen/Crois Mhic Lionnáin: No absentee landlords repossessor’s or their agents wanted in south Armagh.

The sign is presumably in relation to the shuttered Quinn’s supermarket across the street, of which there are three images below. The graffiti reads ‘No Sale’ and ‘No land grabbers here’. The supermarket closed in June, 2013 (Crossmaglen Examiner).

The Sun Will Make You Blind

2013-07-08 TheSun+

Members of local graffit artist crew TMN (whose names are listed in the lower left) have collaborated on this new anti-capitalist mural in College Court in the city centre, attacking The Sun (newspaper) and the recently deceased former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, who is shown here with glowing eyes: “The Sun will make you blind life people say … cost you your sight as well as 30p a day.”

Jobs That Aren’t There

These stencils on the back of the dole office, visible from Great Patrick St, are lamenting the lack of jobs. “Why do they keep sending me to look for jobs that aren’t there?” “5,000 jobs to be created each year. 125,000 people out of work.”
