These “East Belfast Ulster Volunteer Force” stencils are all over the Westwinds estate in Newtownards. Four are shown here, including one that has been defaced with some illegible graffiti. For the tension between East Belfast and North Down brigades of the UVF, see previously: Always A Little Further.

Almanac Response

This is one of a number of small pieces done by emic (TwFb) a couple of years ago (2015?) still hanging on in the city centre. This face appeared again in his 420 but adds dive-bombing pigeons.

West Belfast Waiting For A Home

Here is another PPR/#buildhomesnow stencil on the issue of affordable housing in Belfast. The sites suggested in this piece are the old Mackies factory off the Springfield Road (demolished in 2003) and Glenmonagh (west of the Monagh by-pass).

For the suggestion of Hillview as a site, see Homes!!! and Lidl On Quality. For a fuller list of sites, see Build Homes Now. See also Equality Can’t Wait

Resistance Is Not Terrorism

Saoradh (web | Fb | tw) have added a pro-Palestine mural with the slogan “Resistance is not terrorism” to the Falls Road at the old Linden Street (replacing TMN’s homage to Vaughan Bodē).

Generation Edd Balls

No idea about either the original or the modification – possibly to do with Ed Balls Day, April 28th? Please comment/e-mail if you know more.

Update: Based on the comment from ‘anonymous’, the original was the symbol of Generation Identity, a lambda in a circle (discussed previously in Identity Movement Ireland), which was then blotted out by the anarchists and further modified with “Edd Balls” by a wag.

Lidl On Equality

The PPR (Participation & The Practice Of Rights) project has called for homes to be built at the Crumlin Road “Hillview” site but the council’s planning council approved a retail park (Belfast Live) by a vote of 7 to 6 (BelTel). The connection to supermarket chain Lidl is unclear, as there is no mention of a supermarket in the plans for the retail park. If you can shed any light, please leave a comment. Their slogan “Lidl: Big on quality, Lidl on price” has been rephrased as “Lidl: Big on quality, Lidl on equality”.
