To The People Of Scotland

2014-08-26 RockScotland+
Scots and other residents of Scotland go to the polls on September 18th to vote on independence (WP). The Rock Bar uses the image of Mel Gibson in Braveheart to encourage them to vote “Yes’; recent polls show a slight but persistent preference for a “no” response.  In the background of the wide shot (below), the Viva Palestine lettering can still (2014-08-26) be seen on Sliabh Dubh/Black Mountain.

Oh my lordy lordy that takes the absolute biscuit! I know the machine drivers on the C/N/R side of the fictitious divide have an utterly confused sense of identity which causes them periodically to grasp for whatever is near or in sight but come-on people, have you lost the plot entirely?

To help you out, let me point out the obvious. You have an American actor (albeit a Catholic one) who grew up in Australia. A man with a drink problem who has broken his vows of marriage, and is perhaps a xenophobe, a homophobe and an anti-Semite, who is being lauded as a stand-up choice for offering advice to an entirely different nation on matters pertaining to devolution. Hmmm… But the advice this US/Aus alcoholic, and possible woman-hater (remember his DUI arrest?) is imparting is that of political change on a billboard in a different country to where the referendum is taking place… Whilst, I might add, dressed up as a fictional Hollywood manifestation of William Wallace from a film which was voted In 2009, second on a list of “most historically inaccurate movies”. In addition, said actor is not personally conveying any political sentiments, but his image is being used unlawfully (undemocratically) by others. OMG. Why not just stick a banana on a billboard, folks and say “The banana says Yes to devolution…” Would have as much clout, jeeez,
