Gertrude Street Defenders

Gertrude Street no longer exists – it was just east of where Wolff Close now is. But the Gertrude Street Defenders LOL 525 (Fb) brought back a former lodge (Lees Temperance/East Belfast Orange) March 2017, with former members of the Gertrude Star flute band (News Letter). For the five-flowered board on the right, see The Flax And The Lily. This pair of boards is on the courtyard fencing around the Westbourne Glentoran Supporters Club, off the Newtownards Road in the old Solway Street.

The Dead We Honour Here

“The dead we honour here made the noble sacrifice for a cause that should never be forgotten.” A new board has been added to the memorial to the Ulster Volunteers on the Newtownards Road at St Leonard’s Crescent (the old Newcastle Street) over the bricked-up windows of the Belvoir Bar (see previously Not For Sale). The annual parade of the Belvoir Somme Association took place at the end of September (youtube)

There is also a portrait of Carson (see the Paddy Duffy collection), moved up from its previous location on the corner of Welland Street. The UVF Band mural is to the right of the memorial: see The Great War and They Said We’d Never Last.

The memorial tarps to Ian Ogle were photographed on October 5th and appeared in a November 13th post: For His Family. On about the 18th of November they were subject to an arson attack. Belfast Live has reaction from the family.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lays down his life for his family.” The words of John 15:13 are modified slightly to pay tribute to Cluan Place resident Ian Ogle, who was stabbed and beaten to death in January, 2019, after several years of intimidation of the family by members of the east Belfast UVF (Sunday World).

For the original tarp and tributes, see Justice For Ian Ogle; there is also a plaque to Ogle in the street.

“CPV” is presumably “Cluan Place Volunteers” – the initialism was included in some graffiti about houses in the street being burnt out in the early 2000s.

Loyal Servants

All the emblems of an eventful summer for loyalism: the centenary of Norther Ireland was celebrated on May 3rd, Queen Elizabeths platinum jubilee was celebrated in the first week of June, and then she died on September 8th, at the age of 96. “ERII 1926-2022. Always remembered by her loyal servants in east Belfast.”

Fallen Not Forgotten

What’s most unusual here is the tree cross-section (or “tree disk”) (on the left) that has been decorated with a hooded gunman and the insignia of the (east Belfast) UVF and YCV – the final image shows a close-up.

“The uniform may have changed but the cause remains the same. Ulster Volunteer Force. Fallen, not forgotten.” There is a very close variant of this wording on a mural in Bowtown (Newtownards).

Bloody Friday

On July 21st, 1972 – Bloody Friday – 19 IRA bombs exploded in the course of an hour, killing 9, six of them at the Oxford Street bus station, including 15-year-old William Crothers from Parker Street in east Belfast who worked for Ulsterbus as a parcel-boy. The others were three more employess – William Irvine, Thomas Killops, and John Gibson – and two British Army soldiers – Stephen Cooper (32 Squadron) and Philip Price (Welsh Guards). Do You Own A Giant Building?

The search continues for a new home (or homes!) for the Vault artists (tw). It won’t be long before they have to put their paint buckets on their heads and gather up their briefcases and handbags and head out – the building is to be demolished to make room for housing (BBC).
