Hard Brexit

A “hard Brexit” would involve the UK leaving the European Union and the European Economic Area. For Northern Ireland, that would mean (at least) customs checks at the border with the Republic. Politicians on all sides are concerned about what that might mean for the peace, but the split is encouraged by the board above on the “sports zone” next to the Mount Inn on North Queen Street, Belfast. The Navy and RAF ensigns perhaps suggest how the UK’s borders are to be secured.

No To Fascism

“No to fascism – Belfast Antifa”. Here’s another piece of Antifa graffiti in north Belfast, this time on Westland Road at the Oldpark Road. The previous (north Belfast) piece was in Ardoyne.

Free Niall Lehd

Larne man and member of the Continuity IRA or Irish Republican National Congress (IRNC – see Join The IRNC and Maid Of Erin; also IRPC, who now have a Fb page, as does the Free Niall Lehd campaign) member Niall Lehd was initially arrested on explosives charges in 2014 (BBC-NI) and given early release in 2016 (An Phoblacht). He is associated with Ciaran Maxwell, who says that he became a republican bomb-maker out of fear (RTÉExpress). He was returned to jail in March (Irish News).

Below is a wide shot from 2018-02 showing the advertising hoarding that appears to be disused and (another shot of) the ‘RIP Jamie’ graffiti below.

The Grey Wolf

Tucked away at the end of Ashfield Crescent in north Belfast is the Dunmore base – there is another in Coleraine – of the North Irish Horse (web | Fb), a light cavalry reconnaissance unit of the British Army. It was originally created in 1902; after recent restructuring, it comes under the command of the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry.

Homes!!!

Hillview is the – currently vacant – 11-acre area on the Crumlin Road between Woodvale and Ardoyne, formerly the site of a Dunnes store. In August of 2017 the City Council voted to allow the site to be redeveloped as a shopping centre (Belfast Live | BelTel). The possibility of using the site for housing has been pressed by PPR (see Lidl On Quality and various Build Homes Now posts); the tarp shown above is sponsored by Saoradh, who took up the cause in September.

Na Fıanna Ard Eoın

Above is the plaque on Berwick Road/Paráıd An Ardghleanna to four teenaged members of Na Fıanna Éıreann who died in 1972 – Davy McAuley, Josh [Joseph] Campbell, Josie McComiskey and Bernard Fox – all four from Ardoyne/Ard Eoın. McAuley died of a gunshot wound, perhaps at a Louth training camp (Nelson McCausland). Campbell was shot in Eksdale Street in a gun battle with the British Army; McComiskey was shot in Flax Street in a gun battle with the British Army; Fox was shot by British Army in Brompton Street. For the tarp, see Purity In Our Hearts; for the 2016 lily, see In The Cause Of Irish Freedom.

Drug Dealers Will Be Shot

Action Against Drugs (AAD) is a republican paramilitary organisation (the “son of DAAD”, says The Guardian) that killed two people in 2017 that it accused of dealing drugs and ordered three others to leave Ireland (Irish News | Republican News). Allegations of corruption have been made against similar organisations (Belfast Media).
