The Belfast Tattoo Convention took place this past weekend (June 15th and 16th) in the Europa Hotel (BelTel). So, here are pieces from two tattoo parlours in town – above, playing cards with death, on the shutters of Joker tattoo in North Street, and below, White Dragon on Botanic Avenue – as well as an ad for the convention of the shutters of Skull And Bones in North Street.
‘2 Royal Ave’ (web | ig) – the building designed by WJ Barre (Victorian Web) for the Provincial Bank and more recently a Tesco Metro – was turned into a civic and cultural centre by Belfast City Council in 2023 (Belfast Live).
Coincidentally, the building’s rear doors open into Bank Street (formerly Bank Lane) and Bank Square. (It’s not clear whether they were so named because the Farset flowed along Bank Lane, or for the Bank Buildings, constructed in Castle Place in 1785-1787 (WP | Belfast Live); in any case, the streets already had these names well before the construction of the Provincial building in 1867 (Belfast Media)).
Street artist Decoy (ig), with support from DaisyChain (ig), has painted various shutters and electrical boxes. Bank Square is also home to a series of ‘life in the old days’ panels (see A River Runs Through It) and more recent work by Rob Hilken (see The Grid) and DanK (Fast Cars).
Also included (last below) is the art on the shutters of The Sagart in Chapel Lane.
The plaque above – “Ormeau Road in memory [of] Fergie” – is now somewhat incongruously above painted signage for a coffee-and-donuts shop (Bunelos | web) on the Ormeau Road, a commercial road which is also at the edge of the Ballynafeigh neighbourhood.
“Fergie” is perhaps Iain Ferguson, who died in 2021 (Belvoir & Ballynafeigh UPRG on Fb) and is remembered in a tarp on the side of the flats in Belvoir, shown below. (UPRG is affiliated with the UDA – hence the red hand and the six-pointed star in the plaque, alongside the flowers of the four nations – rose, shamrock, daffodil, thistle – and orange lily.)
Landmarks of Enniskillen and Lough Erne are depicted in this “Enniskillen” mural by Danni Simpson (ig) and Karl Fenz (ig) for Experience Enniskillen (web).
Clockwise from the peaked roofs in the bottom left: Lough Erne resort, Enniskillen courthouse, Cole’s Monument, the Cuilcagh Boardwalk (which is featured in Stairway To Heaven), Enniskillen town hall, the bandstand at Cole’s Monument, the Butter Market, Enniskillen Castle, the red heart “selfie frame” in the Broadmeadow (Impartial Reporter), with Marble Arch Caves and fishing on Lough Erne (see also Pike Fishing In Enniskillen) at the bottom.
The piece is in East Street Bridge, on the side wall of Fermanagh Cottage Industries in front of the Presbyterian Church.
Here are the painted shutters of ten different businesses along Main Street in Crumlin, Co. Antrim. The Crumlin Youth mural is on Glenavy Road – it is presumably by Blaze FX (Fb) who also did the interlocking rings for Stylus Engraving.
Abbey dance studios (web) Bangor, offers classes in ballet and performing-arts dance. The mural outside the studio in Abbey Street is by Visual Waste (ig).
“Find harmony in food” by Zippy (ig) at Eat Well Whole Foods (Fb) on the Lisburn Road at Surrey Street, south Belfast, with support from artsekta (ig).
The Roof is the rooftop bar of the Union Street Bar. “The Roof” is by Visual Waste (ig) on the Little Donegall Street side of the bar. The photo was taken from the junction of Stephen and Library streets.
The Ru Paul mural in the space below — seen in Sashay Away — has been blacked out.
Belgian artist Kitsune (ig) added monarch butterflies to the Dunbar Street/Link side of Common Market food hall (web) in August. One of the retailers in the market is Oui Poutine, who also have a food truck, shown below, with art by FGB (ig).
