A Che Guevara quote – “I don’t care if I fall as long as someone else picks up my gun and keeps on shooting” – unifies two panels bearing masked men firing funeral volleys, Irish and Palestinian shields, and “Our day will come” in both Irish and Arabic.
Above is another piece of the multi-panel work by Gerard Kelly (“Mo Chara”) at the top of Springhill, showing a forearm in the colours of the Palestinian flag with a fist clenched around a strand of barbed wire, causing blood to drip down.
Yesterday’s symbolic vote on Catalonian independence (for more background see Votes About Votes) showed 81% in favour of separation from Spain. Here are three shots of the encouragement on Slıabh Dubh (Black Mountain), the second with the Ballymurphy Easter Rising mural in the foreground, the third with the wall of superheroes in Slıabh Dubh estate (see Wallbusters | The Walls, Unbroken | Red-Eye | Cartoon World).
A pro-Gaza “Viva Palestine” mural/stencil has replaced the Maıréad Farrell piece at the top of Berwick Road/Paráıd An Ardghleanna in Ardoyne/Ard Eoın. The flyer on the box touts high-speed broadband – you can go anywhere you want on-line, but, as can be seen from the wide shot below, the road itself runs straight into the Glenbryn “peace” line.
The 7.5 million people of the Spanish region of Catalonia will go to the polls on November 9th for a vote on independence, though it will no longer be a referendum but a non-binding ‘consultation of the citizens’. Indeed, the Spanish government in the last 24 hours has begun taking steps to block even that vote (Reuters). The “Catalan Countries” are Catalonia, Valenicia, and the Balearic Islands, along with Andorra and the French region of Rousillon – see the WP page on Països Catalans for greater detail.
The Catalan mural was painted on top of the mural to blanketman Kieran Nugent (and Brendan Hughes) (seen here in Belfast’s Infamous Prison) which caused some consternation. As can be seen below, Nugent is now being painted into the hunger-strikers mural (Peace With Justice) along with Mairéad Farrell, who led the protest in Armagh Women’s Prison.
Roles are reversed, compared to the first book of Samuel: the Israeli ‘David’ has become a ‘Goliath’ tank, while the role of underdog is filled by Palestinian teenager Faris Odeh who was shot and killed a few days after standing up to this tank (WP). The AP photograph on which the mural is based can be seen in this May 2012 edition of (the Pakistani) The Nation.
Pro-Gaza mural/stencil on Northumberland Street decrying continued US support of Israel: the bloody bars of the US flag stain the Star of David (in the place where the stars would be) and run down the wall. Sponsored by the IRSP/INLA. The phrase “These colors don’t run” dates to 1942 or 1943 in Iowa (see page 10).
This banner just off the Shore Road includes two Palestinian flags and an Irish tricolour, along with a raised first and the lark of freedom, both in green, black, and red.
“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him”. In a sermon on November 4th, 1956 (and repeated on other occasions), Martin Luther King, Jr. imagined a letter from Paul to the Christians of America, expressing concern for spiritual life in a capitalist society and appealing for desegregation of society using non-violent methods: “the weapon of love”, keeping in mind “that you are merely seeking justice for him as well as yourself”.

The image below shows the site in mid-August, without the pro-Palestine boards (for an Irish-language version of which see An Phalaıstín/Palestine; the image above is from the first week of September, 2014.
Above is a detail from the Gerard “Mo Chara” Kelly mural at the northern end of Springhill Avenue: a lone figure in Palestinian colours is about to hurl a Molotov cocktail at a tank in Israeli blue-and-white with a (reversed-Nazi) swastika on its side.
The full mural is shown below. The portion to the left appeared in Palestine Abú and the portion to the right in Hellfire.
