Stones Of Hope

“If you’re looking for a sign … this is it.” ‘Stones of hope’ in support of mental health at the sea wall in Carrickfergus.

Carrick Hill Supports Fiona

It is 15 weeks since Noah Donohoe left home heading for Cave Hill only to end up dead in a north Belfast storm drain. Support for his mother Fiona and the #RememberMyNoah campaign has been widespread, including this tarp in Carrick Hill.

Fuck Racism

Emic (web | tw) usually paints open hands, but has painted an arm and fist comprising many parts for his anti-racism message in Union Street, Belfast.

“Artwork came about because Van Morrison decided to sing about ‘muh freedoms’ in the middle of a global pandemic. Thought there was room for something sensible to be said. Artwork features a raised fist made up of a kind of stitching together of different arms of people from different ethnicities and ages. It’s a sign of resistance against the alarming racism I am seeing both online and on the ground recently. (Uighurs in China, Immigrants in Mediterainean, the state of USA currently, nationalism in the UK). The different arms combined is kind of Frankenstein-esque so I based the aesthetic of the image on Tyler the Creator’s album cover Igor (attached). Also thought Frankenstein’s monster as a metaphor fitted neatly ie Frankenstein creates the monster that goes on to destroy its maker and wreak havoc.”

Join The Socialists!

“Super-rich increase wealth by £25 Billion during crisis yet health workers only get applause … fight for 15% pay increase for all NHS workers.” “US super-rich increase wealth by $367 billion while workers lose lives, jobs, pay. End the rule of billionaires.”

These Socialist Party posters are in the middle Falls, including one on the red letter box outside Áras Uí Chonghaile, interpretative centre for James Connolly, founder of the Socialist Labour Party and the Irish Labour Party.

5G Kills You

5G is not just the next generation of cellular network! 5G weakens your immune system against coronavirus. Or 5G is how the virus spreads. Or 5G is the virus. Or coronavirus is a plot to keep people indoors while 5G is installed so that the tiny tracking chips that will be injected into people via the vaccinations developed by Bill Gates and/or George Soros can be activated. Luckily, a lone graffitist is here to warn us, though details on which conspiracy theory he adheres to are slim. Both images are from Northumberland Street.

Is Deontóır Mé

Organ Donation week officially ended on September 13th but the murals are still to be seen, on the “International Wall” on Divis Street, Belfast, and, as shown above, on Free Derry Corner, showing 3-year-old Dáıthí Mac Gabhann (tw).

Hope And History

International Peace Day, 2020, falls on the same date as it did in 2011, namely September 21st. To celebrate the event, the Imagine mural from 2011 between the security gates has been extended in three directions. The new panels (printed by Alexander Boyd Displays (web) on aluminium) now take up the whole space between the gates, blocking out, on the left, Mark Ervine’s Global Commodity, on the right, (Manchester) United’s Big Lily, and below, a space used recently by Shankill graffitists to support Donald Trump and Israel and to attack the EU. Since the new panels are the usual whitewashing of history in favor of landmark buildings and people in black-and-white (i.e. before the Troubles) – though the bottom panel does appear to include a bonfire or riot image (see final image) – this is arguably a net loss.

The City Council held a 45-minute Zoom event of poems and music called ‘Shaping Peace Together‘.

We Will Rise Again

“Empires fall and tyrannies perish.” In the March 25th, 1916 edition of the Workers’ Republic, a month before the rising, James Connolly took heart from “the magnificent parades of Volunteers under arms, the overflowing meetings, the joyous abandon of the Irish gatherings of all descriptions, and above all the exultant rebel note everywhere manifest” to predict that “we will rise again”. You Can’t Have Capitalism Without Racism

“You can’t have capitalism without racism” – Malcolm X, from a speech to the Militant Labor Forum in New York on May 29th, 1964 (youtube). More fully he says “It’s impossible for a white person to believe in capitalism and not believe in racism; you can’t have capitalism without racism.” Sticker by the www.socialistparty.org on the Falls.
