“No to fascism – Belfast Antifa”. Here’s another piece of Antifa graffiti in north Belfast, this time on Westland Road at the Oldpark Road. The previous (north Belfast) piece was in Ardoyne.
Hillview is the – currently vacant – 11-acre area on the Crumlin Road between Woodvale and Ardoyne, formerly the site of a Dunnes store. In August of 2017 the City Council voted to allow the site to be redeveloped as a shopping centre (Belfast Live | BelTel). The possibility of using the site for housing has been pressed by PPR (see Lidl On Quality and various Build Homes Now posts); the tarp shown above is sponsored by Saoradh, who took up the cause in September.
The International Wall on Divis Street draws coach-loads of tourists every day (“tens of thousands” according to Sinn Féin’s Fra McCann). A new IRSP board affixed to the top of the ‘magic lantern’ mural (see Spreading The Word) warns visitors to take precautions. “Community notice: thieves are operating in this area. Please make sure your valuables are secure and out of sight. Respect our community and visitors. Cease this activity!” Here are articles about the Divis Hoods Liberation Army (DHLA) from 2017 and 2016.
Voters in the Republic go to the polls tomorrow (Friday May 25th) to vote on a referendum to replace Article 40.3.3 which guarantees the right to life of the unborn. If replaced, legislation allowing abortion up to 12 weeks would be introduced for debate. The two images today are from Earl Street and College Green in Dublin city centre. The case of Savita Halappanavar (used by the “yes” campaign in the image above) is described in Never Again.
A “blue plaque” has been erected on the front of the Shankill Methodist church (on the Shankill at Berlin Street) to Saidie Patterson “trade unionist and peace activist”. In 1940 she led a seven-week strike to improve conditions and pay in Ewart’s linen mill on the Crumlin Road, where she had been working since age 14. As noted on the plaque, she was the first winner of the World Methodist Peace Prize (in 1977) – Allan McCullough has a photo of Patterson with her medal (the one in the middle). The plaque was unveiled on International Women’s Day 2018. (Irish News | Bel Tel | BBC-NI)
Residents of the Markets are challenging a planned 55 million pound high-rise office-block next to Central Station, which they say will overshadow their homes (Irish News). A decision in the case is expected by the end of the month (BelTel)
Action Against Drugs (AAD) is a anti-drugs organisation of former IRA members and perhaps using IRA weapons. The ‘recruitment’ graffiti and warning to drug-dealers shown above is at the junction of Albert Street and Divis Street in west Belfast.
This mural (perhaps still in progress) is in the Connswater Women’s Group (“CWG” in the mural) spot on Severn Road, showing the sun rising over the Harland & Wolff cranes in east Belfast. For the previous mural, see The Verticality Of The Divine.
The evolution of the #BuildHomesNow mural on Northumberland Street continues with a list of sites that PPR (Participation & the Practice of Rights tw | web) thinks suitable for building homes: Monagh, the Gasworks, Mackies, Sirocco, Belfast Harbour. Previous versions: June 2016 | January 2017.
