Much Love

Jamie took his own life by hanging, in the park opposite this graffiti in Torrens Avenue. Northern Ireland has the UK’s highest suicide rate (19.3 deaths per 100,000 and 30.3 deaths per 100,000 for men – National Archives). Below is another piece of memorial graffiti, in Pilot Street. “RIP Kev – from Ben.”

U’ll Do Nottin!

A drugs-related dialogue on the walls of Berwick Road in Ardoyne. “AAD” is “Action Against Drugs” who threaten that “Drug dealers will be shot” (in June, they claimed responsibility for two killings – Irish News). But the respondent – perhaps with the power of the resurrection in mind – is unimpressed.

Here are three images from last week of graffiti from the Townsend Street side of the Divis Street from the Divis Hoods Liberation Army (DHLA).

LA’s Walk Of Fame

Holy Cross Girls’ Primary is a Catholic school within the loyalist enclave of Glenbryn in upper Ardoyne. Although it is in the style of the Los Angeles Dodgers (baseball team) “LA” in this case stands for “loyalist Ardoyne”. The school was the site of some extraordinary scenes during 2001 as police and army formed a cordon against local protesters so that children could reach the school. (See It’s Black And White.)
