Businesses across the north (and across the world) struggle to function during the coronavirus pandemic with measures such as limiting the number of customers on site, shifting to kerb-side pick-up, frequent sanitising of surfaces, requiring the wearing of masks, and maintain a physical distance of 6 feet from customers. This images from ‘USA Hand Car Wash & Valet’ in Larne, describes the measures being taken: “Staff are social distancing. Wash & dry only. Door sills not dried to avoid contact. No contact payments. Money to be left on passenger seat. Thank you for your co-operation.”

The Sınn Féın logo takes the place of the PSNI service badge (which already contains a harp and a shamrock) on the cap of a PSNI officer. “Police Service Of Northern Ireland – destroying the loyalist community since 4th nov. 2001. In the pocket of Sinn Fein [sic]”.

DJ and remixer Andrew Weatherall died in February. He was most famous for his work on Primal Scream’s Screamadelica album in 1991. The mural above is by Glen Molloy (Fb), who also recently did Prince Of Peace Line. Another mural to Weatherall was painted in Edinburgh by Shona Hardie.

Location, Location, Location

The lower part of Hogarth Street (in Tiger’s Bay) was demolished almost a decade ago and the 20 new houses are almost completed. The homes are being built by Apex Housing Association, which says that “The houses will be modern, functional and attractive; and with public transport links, community and shopping facilities all on your doorstep, the location of Hogarth Street is ideal.” Not so ideal for taigs, though: In case the painted kerb-stones and Ulster Banners weren’t sufficient to get the message across to any Catholics who were thinking of moving in, the graffiti on the left of the street makes it clear that the area is solidly loyalist. It was washed over in reddish paint a few days later.

Coronavirus places ordinary people such as health-care workers and employees of essential businesses in extraordinary times. This new Mount Vernon mural thanks NHS staff by depicting them as supermen and -women in disguise.

In the background is Prepared For Peace, Ready For War.

The Royal Air Force was established on April 1st, 1918 and in 1925 the 502 (Ulster) Squadron was formed at Aldergrove as a Special Reserve squadron (and later as an Royal Auxiliary Air Force squadron). The squadron flew bombing raids against enemy submarines and ships during the second World War, from a succession of bases, including Limavady, Norfolk, Cornwall, and Stornoway (WP). (The plane depicted is perhaps a Halifax from later in the war. The officer depicted is perhaps Robert Oxland, the first commanding officer.) The mural above, in Main Road, Glynn, was unveiled on August 20th, 2018 (Roy Beggs) to commemorate the Force’s 100th anniversary.

If I Send Pestilence

Some communities, because of their previous piety, have the ear of the Lord, and need only pray when the Lord sends drought or locusts or pestilence in order to be granted relief (2 Chronicles 7: 14). This mural suggests that the people of Tiger’s Bay are one such people, but that they need to start praying if they want to be freed from the Coronavirus.
