Summer In The City

2014-09-15 SpiersPlaceClose+

Above and below is the scene at the end of summer in the courtyard of the Rex Bar – bunting and bouquets join the flags of the home nations and various boards celebrating the queen’s diamond jubilee and commemorating the 36th Ulster division “who selflessly gave their lives for King and county at the battle of the Somme”. The new boards (on the left hand side of the wide shot) were featured previously in The Last Post, along with the Union flag of The People’s Army. For the same scene ten years previously, see Betting Office.

Winter In The Tropics

2014-11-21 BotGardens3+

The tropical ravine in the Botanic Gardens is closed for renovation over the winter. The large plants which could not be moved had to be wrapped up as protection against the cold. (Belfast City Council) The ravine – including the elevated interior walkway shown above – was the brain-child of Charles McKimm (Ulster History Circle) whose blue plaque is shown in the second image. The images in this post were taken on the day before closing.

Magic Mountain

2014-11-19 PrincessesDisney+

Here is a final image from the new wall of Disney characters in the Slıabh Dubh estate. (See previously: Look Behind You | If The Shoe Fits.) On Aladdin‘s magic carpet we have Princess Jasmine, Abu the monkey, and Iago the parrot, while on the stairs is Esmerelda (from The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and between them is The Owl from Sleeping Beauty. At the bottom we have Minnie Mouse, Figaro (from Pinocchio and also Minnie’s pet cat), and Daisy Duck.

Two wide shots can be found below. The first shows the entirety of the wall, the second shows (some of) the adjacent wall of superheroes. All 11 current Disney princesses are included, as well as the sisters Elsa and Anna from Frozen.

The Most That Man Can Give

2014-08-18 LindsayWWI+

Computer-generated board in Lindsay Street showing a map of the northern end of the Western Front and images of soldiers marching, on horseback, and in the trenches: Donegall Pass remembers 1914-1918 the great sacrifice. Lest we forget. Here are commemorated the many local men who during the Great War of 1914-1918 gave the most that man can give: life itself for God for King and Country.

This Belfast Popeye has four arms and massive thumbs, enough to hold up Titanic. As well as an anchor and life buoy, the figure sports an Irish harp, mushrooms, a lion rampant, a pike(?), a shamrock, a Celtic cross, tiger stripes, a snake, and various other symbols.

Continuity Not Compromise

The first image, above, shows a Continuity IRA (CIRA) stencil over what appears to be a ‘support Maghaberry POWs’ poster outside the West Belfast Partnership/Páırtíocht Iarthar Bhéal Feırste offices on the Falls Road (see the third image, below, for a wide shot). The second, below, claims that Waterford Street/Sráıd Phort Láırge is CIRA GHQ – general head-quarters.

Gie’s A Hand O’ Thine

2014-09-02 HandsCrop+

“A friend is a hand that is always holding yours no matter how close or far apart you be; A friend is someone who is always there and will always always care. A friend is a feeling of forever in the heart.” A new community mural in Ballymurphy shows locals seated in a circle of hands. Among the surrounding quotes (visible in the second image, below) are two lines from Robert Burns’ Auld Lang Syne (“And there’s a hand my trusty friend [fiere] And gies [gie’s] a hand to [o’] thine”, and, “We’ll take a cup of kindness yet For auld lang sang [syne]”)

The other lines are from …

I’ll Tell Me Ma (“Out she comes as white as snow, rings on her fingers a bells on her toes”, and, “My Aunt Jane she called me in, she gave me tea out of her wee tin”)

I Know My Love (“I know my love by her way of walking”)

The Gypsy Rover (“The gypsy rover came over the hill, down through the valley so shady”)

The Fields Of Athenry (“Low lie the fields of Athenry, where once we watched the small free birds fly”)

The Cobbler (“Oh, my wife she is humpy, she’s lumpy, my wife she’s the devil, she’s black, and no matter what I may [do] with her, her [tongue it goes clickety-clack]”)

and a skipping song (“On the hillside stands a lady, who she is I do not know”)

A wide shot (third below) shows the other two murals on this stretch of Ballymurphy Road: Between and Bryson-Mulvenna.
