One of the H&W cranes and the spire of Calvary Baptist church (and a street-light) reach to the heavens over the junction of Dee Street and Severn Street and (as the wider shot, below, shows) a “Connswater Women’s Group” mural.

Six of the seven New Lodge tower blocks each feature two hunger strikers, on the narrow sides of the building. Those featured are the ten who died in 1981 along with Frank Stagg and Michael Gaughan. Here are images of five of them. Above is Raymond McCreesh, below is Kieran Doherty with a tricolour and ‘Justice for the Craigavon 2’, third is Martin Hurson and a Palestinian flag, fourth is Francis Hughes, and fifth is Frank Stagg.
An annotated Google map and a table give the Irish, English and former names of the flats (“houses”) as well as their locations and the hunger strikers on each.

Religion and politics mix in this image of the Blessed Virgin Mary gazing at a recent mural at the bottom of Teach Na bhFıann/Fianna House (formerly Dill House) in the New Lodge. “Cumann Na mBan” in Irish is “the women’s organization/council/society” in English. The organization in question is the republican paramilitary group which was founded on April 2, 1914 and celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

The Socialist Party flyer above on Royal Avenue urges Belfast residents to pay attention to the on-going protests against water charges in the Republic as a way of learning how to resist any cuts implemented by Stormont. Yesterday marked one in a shifting series of deadlines for registration for the water scheme and rallies were held in various southern cities (Independent). Water charges have been ruled out in the North until at least 2015 (Tele).

A second plaque has been added to “The People’s Army” wall on the Shankill Road (at Moscow Street) by the LPWWA Scotland: “In everlasting memory of Volunteer Alastair Von (Ziff) 19th October 2009”. It joins a plaque to “A true soldier – Big Bill Campbell”, leader of the UVF’s 1st Scottich battalion. Campbell and Von were imprisoned for bombing Glasgow pubs in 1979 and Campbell is suspected of involvement of the McGurk’s Bar bombing in 1971. (See also: The Economist gives a brief history of Glasgow sectarianism.) Below are a close-up of the plaques and a shot of the wall last year. Song in honour of Bill Campbell. The Campbell plaque was originally on the Northland St mural of the Shankill West Belfast 1st Batt A Coy 5th Plat before it was reimaged as a Thiepval memorial mural.

Here’s the second of two Emic (Fb | Web) pieces done for CNB14: a male figure is engrossed in the music coming from his headphones. The location is the shutter of the Young Savage vintage clothing store on (upper) North Street, part of Bigg Life Arts/Cafe Wah! As can be seen in the wide shot of the Centre, below, Emic also did a piece two shutters down (the Inkie piece in between was featured in Art Lab); his other CNB14 piece is a little further north on the same street.

“End partition” was the message on the mountain (Black Mountain/Slıabh Dubh) last week, shown here between Clonard Monastery on the left (where the Hume-Adams talks took place in 1988 and 1993) and the Cupar Way “peace” line on the right.
