Carrick Hill Supports Fiona

It is 15 weeks since Noah Donohoe left home heading for Cave Hill only to end up dead in a north Belfast storm drain. Support for his mother Fiona and the #RememberMyNoah campaign has been widespread, including this tarp in Carrick Hill.

Give Me Strength

Paul, sounding like a Stoic, encourages people to be content no matter what the circumstances. “‘I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me’ – Philippians 4:13” Thanks to an anonymous model in Wilson Street for letting us take a photo of his t-shirt.

Socialism Is Neither Protestant Nor Catholic

“Socialism is neither Protestant nor Catholic, Christian nor Freethinker, Buddhist, Mahometan, nor Jews [sic]. It is only human. We of the Socialist working class realise that as we suffer together we must work together that we may enjoy together. We reject the firebrand of capitalist warfare and offer you the olive leaf of brotherhood and justice to and for all.” From part 6 of Connolly’s Labour, Nationality And Religion in 1910. The mural is in Beechview Park, across the street from Áras Uí Chonghaile/James Connolly Visitor Centre.

Join The Socialists!

“Super-rich increase wealth by £25 Billion during crisis yet health workers only get applause … fight for 15% pay increase for all NHS workers.” “US super-rich increase wealth by $367 billion while workers lose lives, jobs, pay. End the rule of billionaires.”

These Socialist Party posters are in the middle Falls, including one on the red letter box outside Áras Uí Chonghaile, interpretative centre for James Connolly, founder of the Socialist Labour Party and the Irish Labour Party.

5G Kills You

5G is not just the next generation of cellular network! 5G weakens your immune system against coronavirus. Or 5G is how the virus spreads. Or 5G is the virus. Or coronavirus is a plot to keep people indoors while 5G is installed so that the tiny tracking chips that will be injected into people via the vaccinations developed by Bill Gates and/or George Soros can be activated. Luckily, a lone graffitist is here to warn us, though details on which conspiracy theory he adheres to are slim. Both images are from Northumberland Street.

Lady Shani

Lady Shani is a masked Mexican wrestler, fighting for AAA (“triple-A”) promoters, and two-time Reina De Reinas in 2017 and 2018. In August 2018, she defeated long-time rival Faby Apache, who had to shave off her hair as a forfeit. Some lucha libre bouts have continued (without live audiences) during the coronavirus epidemic – here is Lady Shani fighting La Hiedra – but many fighters (according to the LA Times) are struggling to get by.

“Tu dieta no es solo lo que te comes…. Es lo que ves, lo que escuchas, lo que lees, la gente con la que te rodeas y las cosas con las que alimentas tu mente y tu alma. Ten mucho cuidado con las cosas que le das a tu cuerpo, emocional, espiritual y fisicamente”
[Your diet is not just what you eat … It’s what you see, what you hear, what you read, the people you surround yourself with and the things with which you feed your mind and your soul. Be very careful with the things you give your body, emotionally, spiritually, and physically.]

Hope And History

International Peace Day, 2020, falls on the same date as it did in 2011, namely September 21st. To celebrate the event, the Imagine mural from 2011 between the security gates has been extended in three directions. The new panels (printed by Alexander Boyd Displays (web) on aluminium) now take up the whole space between the gates, blocking out, on the left, Mark Ervine’s Global Commodity, on the right, (Manchester) United’s Big Lily, and below, a space used recently by Shankill graffitists to support Donald Trump and Israel and to attack the EU. Since the new panels are the usual whitewashing of history in favor of landmark buildings and people in black-and-white (i.e. before the Troubles) – though the bottom panel does appear to include a bonfire or riot image (see final image) – this is arguably a net loss.

The City Council held a 45-minute Zoom event of poems and music called ‘Shaping Peace Together‘.

In understanding, all walls shall fall down” – Kahlil Gibran

A further shore is reachable from here” – Seamus Heaney

“Regardless the country, a state police force will be used as militia for the political elite against the people – fight back” – 32CSM poster with images of police brutality from around the globe, including the death of George Floyd. The Craft Centre

Father Des Wilson and Frank Cahill sit together in a Springhill flat overlooking Tara Stores and the Craft Centre, two of the enterprises they helped to establish (along with the Whiterock Industrial Estate) in an attempt to bring employment to the area. Around 1982, they were part of a group that bought Conway Mill for use as a community and business centre; the image above was taken in the contemporary Conway Mill.

On the right, the accomplishments and accolades of Seán MacBride are listed (shown below). During the course of his life, MacBride was an IRA member and imprisoned by the Free State, founder of Clann Na Poblachta and TD, and international politician including a spell as chair of Amnesty International. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1974 (WP). The MacBride Principles of 1984 set out nine conditions of fair employment.

Ballymurphy Massacre Interactive Tour

The starting-point for the Ballymurphy Massacre tour (below) is on the so-called International Wall (at the corner of Divis Street and Northumberland Street) but the first site is two miles away, in Springfield Close. The third stop, shown above, commemorates the lives of Joseph Corr and John Laverty, killed in separate incidents by British Army paratroopers (distinguished by their red berets) on August 11, 1971, at the top of the Whiterock Road.
