A Neat Little Town

Dubliner Cormac “Mack” Dillon (ig) was in Belfast for CNBX/HTN18 last September and painted a sign for the city itself.

Lower Ormeau Cafe & Guesthouse

The Lower Ormeau Cafe & Guesthouse (Fb | web), which opened in October 2017, has added a mural of the nearby Belfast Gasworks in Victorian times – the building still stands today, although it ceased to function as a gasworks in 1988.

Eden Vale

Esther O’Kelly’s (tw | web) work for CNBX/HTN18 is perhaps a large-scale version of her painting Eden Vale, “the story of a family picnic that ended up with a soaking in a waterfall”.

Xenomorph

What strange forms flow from the minds of artists. The alien xenomorph is the creation of Swiss surrealist HR Giger (WP); the wild-style writing – with spray-can in hand – is local.

They Control You

Ending The Harm is a Department Of Justice (Tackling Paramilitarism Programme) campaign of posters, radio ads, and hard-hitting videos (YouTube) aimed at combatting paramilitary-style violence. This hoarding is on Newtownards Road, in competition with the UVF mural in the Iceland car-park (see Please Pay Here).

Their Only Colour Was Khaki

This is a close-up of the painting in the window of My Old Toy Box (Fb) in Smithfield Market (BelfastCity). It includes the 36th (Ulster) Division, and 10th and 16th (Irish) Divisions. It is not clear why the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division (WP) is included as it does not appear to have any connection to Ireland. Please leave a comment if you can explain the connection.

An Unrepentant Republican

Continuity IRA or Irish Republican National Congress (IRNC – see Join The IRNC and Maid Of Erin) member Niall Lehd was initially arrested on explosives charges in 2014 (BBC-NI) and given early release in 2016 (An Phoblacht) but returned to jail a year ago, in March of 2018 (Irish News). In December he was charged on several counts relating to terrorism and explosives (Belfast Live). Lehd professes his innocence and says his license was revoked simply because he is “an unrepentant republican” (Free Niall Lehd campaign). His cause has been added to the IRPC (Irish Republican Prisoners Committee | Fb) board on Northumberland Street.

The Poet & The Guitarists

In 2003 Seamus Heaney recorded a CD of poems accompanied by the uilleann piping of Liam O’Flynn (Claddagh). He now finds himself (post mortem) in the company of three Irish/Northern Irish guitarists: Bap Kennedy from Belfast (featured previously in Half Bap Bap), Gary Moore also from Belfast, and Rory Gallagher from Ballyshannon and Cork.

“Walk on air against your better judgement” is from the poem ‘The Gravel Walks’ and is inscribed on Heaney’s tombstone. “A friend is someone who walks into a room when everyone else is walking out” is not from any song but attributed to Moore. “Born on the wrong side of time” is a Gallagher-penned Taste song (youtube).
