Making Changes

2015-06-08 MakingChanges+

The history of music is told (from right to left) in a new mural. The gramophone gives way to the cassette and then to the CD and finally the iPod, with a mic and speakers in the middle. The suggestion, presumably, is that life in east Belfast also changes. From Blaze FX, who also did the Teenage Dreams repaint on the other side of the flyover, and local youths from both Short Strand and Newtownards Road.

“In loving memory: Andrew “BA” Haddock. You still live on in the hearts and minds of the family and friends you left behind. Missed by all your family and friends in Ballysillan.” The board above to a local lad who died young sits next to rock-wall seating and a sculpture on Tyndale Drive in Ballysillan.

Art Is A Hammer With Which To Shape Reality

2014-12-18 DMCJMKShoreRd+

Arts For All (Fb | Web) is a community arts organization in north Belfast, sponsoring workshops and events, giving space to artists-in-residence, and putting on exhibits in its John Luke Gallery. The image above is of the mural on the side of their own building on the York Road, painted in 2012 by JMK (Jonny McKerr) and DMC (Dermot McConaghy) – their signatures can be seen on the brickwork at the right. Arts For All were also one of the sponsors of the recent WWI mural by Jonny in Tigers Bay: The Undertaker | The Home Front.

2014-10-27 CNBFaigyBellaire+

Here is Faigy’s (Fb) finished piece, begun for CNB 2014, in William Street, just round the corner from Bellaire Hair & Beauty (Fb) in Royal Avenue (and opposite Hicks’s Lurid Wood from the previous year): one of Faigy’s wide-eyed beauties sports an extravagant pink hair-do. (Some of the jewels in the original version have been painted out.)

Previously: Faigy’s 2013 CNB piece | piece for Inked tattoo parlour.

The Phantom Queen

2014-09-24 CNBFrizEve+

The Morrígan (the phantom queen or the great queen) is a character from Irish mythology, appearing prominently in the story of Cú Chulaınn. She takes various forms – crow, cow, wolf, eel, as shown on the right-hand side of the mural above – in addition to appearing as a young and old woman and as a trio of women. (For more info, consult WP.) This is new work by Friz (Web | Fb | Tw) for Culture Night Belfast 2014.

Wolf

The stained-glass style of ‘Wolf’ by James Earley of Dublin, for Culture Night Belfast 2014, is perhaps due to the influence of the family business in ecclesiastical art (inputout.com). Wide shot of the whole below.

Home Taping Is Killing Music

2014-09-27 CNB-KVLR+

KVLR’s massive (four storey high) work for this past weekend’s Red Bull Music Academy live music festival, painted just prior to Culture Night Belfast 2014, shows a boy sitting serenely on a speaker listening with headphones to a single-reel tape player plugged into a flue on the side of the building. On his knitted hat is the logo of the British Phonograph Industry’s 1980’s campaign against cassette taping.
