Brits Out!

03381 2016-04-19 Leave EU+

“Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues” — commentary on the “Brexit” vote, coming up on June 23rd, from the Tiger’s Bay community in north Belfast, likening the EU to Babylon — “Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and Abominations of the Earth”, “the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird”, “that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth” — whose destruction is prophesied in the book of Revelation. Hence: “Vote Leave E.U.”.

The Back Of The Net

03320 2016-03-07 Own Goal+

The Irish News last week reported the concerns of west Belfast parents whose children sometimes play under-10 football at Inverary Community Centre, in front of the UVF mural shown above, with the flags of Scotland and the United Kingdom in the background. East Belfast FC, which is based at Inverary, responded that the complaints are “contrived” and that all children are welcome at the ground.

Boundary Way

03116 2015-10-11 Lower Shankill Box+

The north and west sides of the substation at Boundary Way in the Lower Shankill estate have been repainted, restoring the Union flag (M02467) and “UYM” (M02469) lettering in vibrant red, white, and blue.

The other two sides, which previously featured “UFF” (X00249) and a C Coy. mural (M02466) are now blank and walled in.

For God, Ulster & Scotland

03216 2015-12-04 Protestant Boys Stirling+

This panel (one of three) of a new mural on the Shankill celebrates the Stirling Protestant Boys Flute Band and its association with the Shankill Road: “Stirling Protestant Boys Flute Band [Fb] were formed in February 2003 and to this day take part in parades across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. The band has a great connection with our friends from Belfast, especially those from the Greater Shankill area. In November 2012 Stirling Protestant Boys were presented with the battle honours of the Young Citizen Volunteers and the 36th (Ulster) Division. The band would like to thank the people of the Shankill Road for their continued support.”

Flag Of Flags

Three images of flags. In the one above, flags are seen on either side of the Short Strand “peace” line: the Irish tricolour and the flag of Palestine stand over a Union flag hung next to the local bonfire site.

The second is a “flag of flags” in Tullycarnet – the Union flag, the cross of St. George,  St. Andrew’s Saltire, and the Ulster banner, all together around the red hand of Ulster and the crown, and “No Surrender”.

In the third, the flag of Hamas flies above the red-and-yellow Starry Plough of the Irish Republican Socialist Party in Derry’s Bogside.

Above and below are summertime images of the Main Road in Glynn, just south of Larne, County Antrim, marked with the union jack and flags of Scotland, Northern Ireland and England and Orange symbols such as the crown, a key (for the Siege of Derry, rather than the crossed keys?), Jacob’s ladder, along with the six-pointed star.

The images above and below show a new UDA mural in memory of John Gregg, “The Reaper”, who waged a campaign of terror against Catholics in south-east Antrim and was reputedly associated with British neo-Nazi groups. Gregg was gunned down in 2003, while returning from a Rangers match, as part of the power struggle with Johnny Adair. Watta-Chip (from the previous mural) has been replaced by Turkish Kebabs (Fb).

Rose & Thistle

The Pride Of Ballybeen is a recently-formed flute band and they now have a band mural. It features the Union Flag and Ulster Banner flanking the red hand of Ulster on a six-pointed star against an orange field, surrounded by a crown and a garland pinned by a rose; the titular banner, below, is supported by shamrock and thistle.

Video of the band in action on youtube.
