Some of the children’s mural in Boyne Court (off Sandy Row) is still hanging on, though quite faded and with about half the panels missing. The first two images (from 2017) show children playing on a lamp-post swing in the middle of the street (panel 4); the latter two (from 2012) show a broader view (panels 4-5-6) of Sandy Row buildings and (on the last of the ten panels) an alien landing.

Olympic boxing champion (and former Ireland soccer player) Katie Taylor is currently 6-0 in her professional career. Her image is being used here as an inspiration (or warning?) to the children of Victoria nursery in the New Lodge. She was also featured in a mural outside Coláiste Feirste in west Belfast.

Amnesty International is working with Eden Place Arts centre on a project into the lives of children, which includes learning to stencil and paint with Donal O’Doherty and Karl Porter from UV Arts in order to produce various murals and paintings. The largest image, of a child’s t-shirt, is shown above. More information from Derry Journal.
“This mural was designed by youth from Pilots Row Youth Club to raise awareness of child labour within the fashion industry, to educate and promote the basic human rights of children across the world. In association with Amnesty International, Eden Place Arts Centre and UV Arts, participants had the opportunity to reflect on the true cost of our throw-away fashion industry and created this thought provoking mural. Help us spread awareness of this and show your support by standing up for someone’s rights today!”

Yesterday we featured the work of the “Ambassadors For Peace” on the Shankill-side gate on Northumberland Street, and today is the turn of the Falls-side gate. Like the upper gate, this one features figures holding hands, though this time on a bridge over a river.
The mural replaces the CRF graffiti on the gate.
For comparison of the gates before and after the new paintings, the second image is of the interior of the Shankill gate.

Young people from the Shankill, Divis, and Newington came together as “Ambassadors For Peace” (Fb) with students from Susquehanna University in the US to paint the two outer sides of the gates in the Northumberland Street “peace” line. A happier image from Oakfield Drive (after yesterday’s offering): the interests of local children are reflected in the tiles they made: a Union flag and Ulster banner but also a heart and “Liverpool”. One of four such tile collages on the front of the (now-defunct) Glenfield Community Association building.
