The Poppy Trail 1917

The 1917 board in the Poppy Trail series (1914 | 1915 | 1916) celebrates female munitions workers as well as making local connections to the battles of 1917: George Cairns of Roden Street and Thomas Fitzpatrick of Cullingtree Road.

Undisputed Champion

Belfast’s Ryan Burnett is IBF bantamweight world champion. What was initially given as a split decision was later corrected to unanimous due to a judge mixing up the boxers on his card (Telegraph). The mural above, by Glen Molloy, is on Cassidy’s on the Antrim Road, near Bearnageeha where Burnett (and Paddy Barnes) went to school.

Prepare To Roar!

Sacred Heart Boxing Academy was housed in the parochial hall (shown in the middle of the mural) before closing perhaps because of safety concerns and/or debt. Above is a shot of the main panel in its entirety (close-ups were featured yesterday (Sacred Heart Boxing Academy). The panel on the far right in the wide shot, below, was featured the day before that (Belfast Boxers).

Sacred Heart Boxing Academy

Here are close-up shots of the main panel in the new Sacred Heart Boxing Academy mural. You can try to identify the boxers in the mural by comparing them to the archive of images on the club’s Facebook page (or you can have Eamon McAuley tell you them).

Belfast Boxers

Belfast Boxers (Tw | web) is a non-profit group promoting boxing in the city. Its logo is included in a new mural in the Bone celebrating Belfast boxing and specifically the old Sacred Heart Boxing Academy – as we’ll see in tomorrow’s post.

Tyre-Free Pyre

Tyres for the Conway Street/Cupar Way bonfire were removed from the site in June (Belfast Live | image at Alternatives) but some might have recently been put in the middle (Belfast Media). In any case, there are still plenty of pallets, not to mention Sinn Féin election posters featuring Alex Maskey, John Finucane, and Michelle O’Neill, as well as the flag of ISIS, and IRA and INLA lettering.

Killed In Action 1st July

As the plaque in the third images shows, the mural was originally painted in 2006 for the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The plaque was originally in the plinth below the headstone – see Killed In Action. The side wall was painted last year for the 100th anniversary.

They Sleep Side-By-Side

Bangor’s Finest (Fb)” the Pride of Whitehill Flute Band marks its 40th anniversary (1976-2016) with a mural and two small boards dedicated to Ulster Volunteers and Young Citizen Volunteers in WWI: “When you go home, tell them of us and say “For your tomorrow we gave our today.” “They fought together as brothers-in-arms, they died together and now they sleep side-by-side. To them we have a solemn obligation.”

The Sons Of Ulster

The Ulster Tower at Thiepval “is dedicated to the glory of God in grateful memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the 36th (Ulster) Division and of the sons of Ulster in other forces who laid down their lives in the Great War, and of all their comrades-in-arms who, by divine grace, were spared to testify to their glorious deeds.” The boards are next to Warszawiacy Berlinowi.
