Absent Friends

2014-08-25 AbsentFriends+

David Lee was a founder, in 1985, of Pride Of The Hill Flute Band in Carnmoney/Ballyduff. Kris Muckle – now deceased – was a long-time member. (Band Parades) Both are commemorated in this mural. If you know what territory is outlined around the red hand in the centre, please comment/e-mail. Our best guess is that it is Carnmoney Hill.

Oh, Paddy Boy

2014-09-06 BarnesDetail+

Paddy Barnes fights India’s Devendro Singh Laishram in the light flyweight gold-medal bout at the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow. Barnes won gold, successfully defending his title and adding to his collection, shown in the second image (below) and listed at the bottom of the mural (third image, below). Barnes sparked controversy when he remarked, as the Londonderry Air/Danny Boy was played as the Northern Irish “anthem”, “That’s not my national anthem.”. The mural is in Barnes’s home area of Ardoyne/Ard Eoın and was painted by Lucas Quigley and Mickey Doherty.

Justice

The Craigavon Two – John-Paul Wootton and Brendan McConville – were convicted of the 2009 murder of PSNI Constable Steven Carroll; ‘JTFC2′ or ‘Justice For The Craigavon Two‘ is the group campaigning for their release. The mural above shows two pairs of arms in chains, surrounded by a border of chains.

Men In Black

Two masked men with assault rifles flank the red fist and white star emblem of the Ulster Freedom Fighters. The figure on the left is shown in detail below. The South East Antrim UDA’s tumultuous history is substantial enough to warrant its own WP page.

Here are two panels of Matt Sewell’s large-scale mural at the Donegall Street end of the North Street Arcade: above is an owl (held by a girl) and below is a jay (?). #Gaza

2014-08-21 #GazaDetail+

A young woman dressed in the red, black, and green of Palestine secures her keffiyeh, preparing for defiance rather than expressing her modesty – a detail from a new mural in Balfour Avenue (shown below) with a graffitist in a red-and-white keffiyeh (the colours of the PFLP – see previously: The Popular Front) writing “Free Palestine”. An ‘anti-fascist action’ flag flies in the background.

Previously: Leila Khaled wearing a keffiyeh – traditionally a male garment – in the style of a hijab – a woman’s garment (WP).

Revolution

2014-06-18 BikeRevolution+

“Every turn of the wheel is a revolution”. This streetart by KVLR is outside The John Hewitt (pub) in the city centre. The John Hewitt was set up in 1999 by Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre (BURC | Belfast Media) and the mural was painted in 2000 (Turkington). This makes it one of the earliest pieces of street art in Belfast, if not the earliest. See Visual History 11 – The Rise Of Street Art.
