Special Service Force

The Ulster Special Service Forces (USSF) was an elite unit of the Ulster Volunteers. Its flag includes the UVF emblem with a garland of thistle, shamrock, and rose. For an earlier (1988) example and more info, see USSF in Belfast; also another in Londonderry (1998).

Thy Fearful Symmetry

The mortal hand that has framed the fearful symmetry of Blake’s Tyger is Friz, in her piece for CNB17/HTN17. “Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright/In the forests of the night/What immortal hand or eye/Could frame thy fearful symmetry?”

Pearl

The female figure painted by Irony (twFb | tumblr) for CNB/HTN was the subject of a naming competition. There were various humorous suggestions but our favourite is “Iris”, to go with “Aether and Echo”, which is the name of the pub.

The Freedom Of Others

“To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” (Nelson Mandela) Nobel peace prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi’s portrait has been x-ed out on the Frederick Douglass mural on Northumberland Street, in protest at her failure to speak out, from her position as Myanmar’s State Counsellor, against the persecution of the Muslim Rohingya population by the Myanmar military. For images of the full mural, see Liberating Minds (and for John Lewis’s addition at the expense of Rosie The Riveter, see As I Would Not Be A Slave, So I Would Not Be A Master).
