Ulster’s Past Defenders

03942-2016-11-11-ulsters-past-defenders

The Ulster Special Constabulary or B-Specials existed from 1920 to 1970; it was disbanded after being used for riot control in The Battle Of The Bogside. The Ulster Defence Regiment (which was under military control and was, as the mural notes, the largest infantry in the British Army) existed from 1970 until 1992, when it was merged with the Royal Irish Rangers.

The Duke Of Windsor

Tommy Dickson ended his career (in 1965) with a partial season at Glentoran. Before that, however, he spent 16 seasons in the first team at Linfield, scoring 451 goals and leading the club to titles in the League Cup, Irish Cup, Gold Cup, Ulster Cup, City Cup, North-South Cup, and County Antrim Shield (shown at the top of the mural). Keep Her Lit

03858-2016-09-26-cnb-adw

Dublin’s ADW (web) did a good job of painting the electrical box in the colour scheme of his CNB16 mural, but had to leave the parking meter be. The mural shows a heart with pressure gauge and heart-shaped porthole.

We Will Never Accept A United Ireland

03847-2016-09-19-never-except

Writing has appeared alongside the “Show No Mercy Expect None Back” mural in Ballyclare. On one side : “We will never accept [was originally “except” but this was quickly changed] a united Ireland – Feriens Tego [the UFF motto]” and “Now entering loyalist Erskine/Rashee Park – Quis separabit [the UDA motto]” and on the other: “Ballyclare heartland of south east Antrim – Simply the best [used with both UDA and UFF]”

The final image is from July, when the wall had been ‘booked’ for the UDA.

Who Fears A United Ireland?

03602-2016-07-02-fdc-connolly

The night before he was executed for his part in the Easter Rising, republican leader James Connolly (5.6.1888-12.5.1916) penned a brief statement calling the British presence in Ireland “a usurpation and a crime against human progress” and declaring “The British government has no right in Ireland, never had any right in Ireland, never can have any right in Ireland”. Here are two images of Free Derry corner with Connolly’s quote, including The Petrol Bomber by the Bogside Artists and and “SFRY” (Sinn Féin Republican Youth) banner on the railings.

Another “fringe girl” by Dublin street artists Novice (Tw) for CNB16/HTN. Hopefully this one will last longer than last year’s piece.
