Breakout

Work by emic (Eoin McGinn Fb | Web |Tw) in south Belfast with some of the 3-D brickwork seen previously in Seeing Things. There are even colour patches on the inside of the open electrical box. Previously in electrical-box-inclusion: ADW’s Keep Her Lit.

Hong Ling Gardens

Cromac Wood Court is home to a housing development – Hong Ling Gardens – aimed at Chinese people over 55. The street sign is thus in English, Chinese, and – because we’re in the Markets area – Irish: Cúırt Choıll Chromóıg.

The Sons Of Ulster

The Ulster Tower at Thiepval “is dedicated to the glory of God in grateful memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the 36th (Ulster) Division and of the sons of Ulster in other forces who laid down their lives in the Great War, and of all their comrades-in-arms who, by divine grace, were spared to testify to their glorious deeds.” The boards are next to Warszawiacy Berlinowi.

Our Chains Will Be Broken Before We Are

This is a pro-Palestine stencil off New Lodge Road with a quote from hunger striker Mawan Barghouti (featured previously in an Ardoyne board). The emblem of the Popular Front For The Liberation Of Palestine is in the lower right.

Your Kingdom Will Endure Forever

Orange emblems added to the Welcome To Loyalist Tigers Bay mural: the crown and bible, a heart and sword, a red fist and the union flag. Two Bible verses are referenced: “And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.” (2 Sam 7:16) and “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God.” (Luke 1:31-33)

Always A Little Further

East Belfast now extends all the way to Bangor: shown today are two East Belfast UVF boards in Whitehill, one a red hand and the other the familiar “pilgrims” image, seen continuously in east Belfast since the 90s in Tamar Street, Mersey Street, and (twice) on the Newtownards Road (currently in the Iceland car park). (Article on the EB – North Down UVF dispute in nearby Bowtown area in 2015.)

Homes Not Hotels

An expansion is planned for the Radisson Blu at the Gasworks site, but the land is zoned for public housing. The plan is contested by Sınn Féın and the Housing Executive.

Meadow Of The Ox

“Clonduff” in English and “Kyefiel” in Ulster Scots, a transliteration and a translation of the Irish “Cluain Daimh”, the meadow of the ox, and thus the sculpture shown above at the entrance to the area. Below are two images of “Tullyard Way”, translated into Ulster Scots as “Heichbrae Airt” from the Irish “tulach ard” (high hillside). The street signs were initially mistaken for Irish and torn down by local residents (Scots Anorak | BBC-NI).
