Prepare To Roar!

Sacred Heart Boxing Academy was housed in the parochial hall (shown in the middle of the mural) before closing perhaps because of safety concerns and/or debt. Above is a shot of the main panel in its entirety (close-ups were featured yesterday (Sacred Heart Boxing Academy). The panel on the far right in the wide shot, below, was featured the day before that (Belfast Boxers).

Sacred Heart Boxing Academy

Here are close-up shots of the main panel in the new Sacred Heart Boxing Academy mural. You can try to identify the boxers in the mural by comparing them to the archive of images on the club’s Facebook page (or you can have Eamon McAuley tell you them).

Belfast Boxers

Belfast Boxers (Tw | web) is a non-profit group promoting boxing in the city. Its logo is included in a new mural in the Bone celebrating Belfast boxing and specifically the old Sacred Heart Boxing Academy – as we’ll see in tomorrow’s post.

Replaces the Rory Donnelly mural Hat Trick.

When You Walk Through A Storm

03658-2016-07-08-youll-never-walk-alone

You’ll Never Walk Alone is most famously sung by the fans of Liverpool Football Club, but this Creggan mural draws on the song’s association with Celtic. Leeds United is the other club in the mural, at the right-hand end.

“Come on, you boys in green!” Here’s a mural from the summer, when Ireland (and Northern Ireland) took part in the European soccer championships. The Euro 2016 trophy is at the centre of an Irish Tricolour.

Crusading

03842-2016-09-18-crues-railings

This past Saturday saw the north Belfast derby between Crusaders and Cliftonville, with the League-Champion and league-leading Crues coming out on top 4-3. Today’s images are from their Seaview home ground: above are the railings and below a mural on a side wall. The newspaper The Express employs the same emblem of a Christian knight.

I Have Fought A Good Fight

03536 2016-06-14 Gary Whittley+

19 year-old Sandy Row resident Gary Whittley was killed in a hit-and-run incident in November, 2005 (BBC-NI) with charges being brought in 2008 (Tele). Most of the mural, which showed him in boxing gear, (see below for a 2012 image) is now gone, but the quote from 2nd Timothy remains: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

Let’s All Do The Huddle

03400 2016-04-16 Huddle Essex+

Players from Scottish football team Celtic and local team Cliftonville “do the huddle” together. The mural was painted in 2013 to celebrate the visit by Celtic to Solitude (Cliftonville’s home pitch) for a Champions League tie between the two teams.

A mural outside Solitude was also painted for the occasion – see The Red Army.

Here are some “in progress” mages of the work above (Fb).

Immaculata amateur boxing club (Fb) (or simply “The Mac”) in the Lower Falls will celebrate its 70th birthday in May this year. This long mural, painted in 2015 and featuring boxing past and present, is in Servia Street, near the club’s Albert Street home.
