In the summer of 2011, both sides of the Flax St/Crumlin Rd interface were pasted with images of the view from the other side, a city scene on the Flax St side as though looking into Woodvale, a hilly scene on the Crumlin Rd as though looking up Flax Street. You can see the Crumlin Road side on Street View. What remains of the other side can be seen in the image above, along with IRPWA posters (see below) concerning “Maghaberry Concentration Camp”, calling “on Sinn Fein [sic] to publicly state that the interpretation of the August agreement of 2010 is the correct one … [and to] … call on their members and supporters to get behind the protesting POWs.”

Both the type of “MagHaberry” and the arrangement of the posters make the connection to the H Blocks of the 1970s and 80s.

Young Conway Volunteers Presents

Saturday 25th June (Whiterock night) Young Conway Volunteers Presents a loyalist cabaret evening and disco, featuring various bands, Ulster Rangers Supporters Club, Shankill Road.” The flute band is associated with the local , with murals to both the flute band There are murals on either side of Conway Street at Conway Walk to both the YCVFB (featuring Thomas and Noel Kinner) and the associated 5th platoon (UVF).

Homecoming Parade

“MOD deny our troops a well deserved homecoming parade. We as a community need to stand together as one and show our support for those who have sacrificed their lives and served this Country. Please show your support for these brave servicemen and women at Belfast City Hall on Sunday May 22nd 2011. Everyone will be meeting at 12 noon at the Shankill Memorial Gardens and walking to Belfast City Hall. If you care be there.”

Save Brendan Lillis

Brendan Lillis was imprisoned in 1977 but freed in 2003. He was returned to prison in 2009 on robbery charges. Lillis was released from Maghaberry on August 19th, 2011, on humanitarian grounds – he suffered from a severe form of arthritis (BBC-NI).

I’m Not A Criminal

When the mural to “the first blanketman” Kieran Nugent mural (in the Rock streets) was re-done in February 2011, it was initially framed with a terrific selection of posters from the period, many of them from continental Europe, about Kieran, the blanket protest, and hunger striker.

“I’m not a criminal. The Brits will have to nail prison clothes to my back.” For the previous mural, and some background about Nugent going “on the blanket”, see M02550.

Oppose Armed Forces Day

In 2009, the Veterans’ Day holiday (begun in 2006) became Armed Forces Day. The event (and the raising of an MoD flag over Belfast City Hall – An Phoblacht) was opposed by éırígí and Sınn Féın. These posters are on the Falls Road.
