Na hÉıreannaıgh Aontaıthe

“Liberté, égalité, fraternité”. The United Irishmen of 1798 had been inspired by the revolutions in both the United States and France, and France attempted without success to send troops to Ireland in 1796 and 1798 (Irish History). “It is new strung and shall be heard” – this style of harp is called a Maid Of Erin harp.

Painted by Andrea Redmond in South Link, Andersonstown, Belfast, for the 200th anniversary of the rebellion. Also new for the 200th anniversary is the stone below in the nearby memorial garden outside the PD. “Who fears to speak of 98? This plaque was erected to the memory of the United Irishmen who gave their lives for Irish freedom; also all those who died as a result of the Great Hunger. ‘These are the times that try men’s souls’ [Thomas Paine] ‘The rich always betray the poor’ – Henry Joy McCracken.”

La Historia Es Nuestra

2013-12-06 HistoriaEsNuestra+

“History is ours, and history is made by the people — La historia es nuestra y la hacon los pueblos”

Here is a super-wide image of the new (c. Dec. 10th, 2013) board on Northumberland Street celebrating the socialist movement in 1970’s Chile. The Unidad Popular, whose emblem can be seen centre-left and in the close-up below, was a coalition of left-wing parties who supported the Marxist Salvador Allende (seen in the middle) for president in the election of 1970. Allende served as president from 1970-1973 until committing suicide during the coup.

The Sagart

2013-12-05 AlecReid+

A tribute to Father Alec Reid, who died on November 22nd and buried on the 27th, has been added to the international wall on Divis Street. Reid was a priest in the nearby Clonard monastery and helped negotiate between Sınn Féın and the SDLP and between nationalists and the government of the Republic. He is perhaps best known for attempting to save Corporals Wood and Howe and administering the last rites to them, in 1988 (WP).

This piece takes the place of a ‘Free Marian Price” mural; Price was freed on May 30th, 2013.

The pieces to the left and right have been previously featured: End Internment | Milltown 25

Mural and stencil in Bóthar Chaıtríona (St. Katherine’s Road) in the St. James’s area showing Che Guevara above the words “I don’t care if I fall as long as someone else picks up my gun and keeps on shooting.” The remnants of the former mural – a Celtic design – can be seen to the left of Che’s head.

Just Can’t Get Enough

2013-11-18 JustCantGetEnough+

The mural above is in St. Katharine’s Road (Bóthar Chaıtríona) and was painted for the Champions League match between Cliftonville and Celtic on July 17th (2013). “Just Can’t Get Enough” is a 1981 Depeche Mode song which Celtic fans made one of their chants in 2009, soon to be followed by other teams’ fans (WP).

The St. James area was once home to Celtic Park (home of Belfast Celtic), now the site of the Park Centre, and a mural to Belfast Celtic faces this one.

Here are two context shots for the gallery of superheroes featured on Friday. The first shows the Springfield Road police station opposite the Slıabh Dubh estate, while the second, taken while the murals were being painted, shows the Springhill/Westrock massacre mural rising on the Springfield Road behind the gallery of heroes, Thor in this case.

Wallbusters

2013-10-24 Spiderman+

If there’s one thing superheroes like doing, it’s breaking down brick walls. At least, Spider Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Wonder Woman do. Cat Woman crawls in via a tunnel painted on a buttress to the wall at the entrance to the Slıabh Dubh estate. The murals were painted by a local artist and local children. For images from the launch, see Black Mountain Shared Space.

A wide shot was included in Yes Yes Catalonia.
