Liggett & Brady

IRA volunteer Francis Liggett was shot by the British Army in January 1973 as he attempted to rob the Royal. One of the images of Gerry Adams in paramilitary beret comes from Liggett’s funeral. Paddy Brady was a Sınn Féın activist shot in 1984 at his work by the UFF (Sutton). Both were from the St James’s area of west Belfast. Their portraits are on either side of Éıre personified. The verses are from Bobby Sands’s poem Weeping Winds.

“Since 1970 seventeen people killed [by rubber and plastic bullets] – including 8 children.” Central is Norah McCabe, along with Julie Livingstone, Brian Stewart, and Carol Ann Kelly; on the left are John Downes and Keith White, a Protestant killed in Portadown in 1986.

“Generations shall remember them and call them blessed.” This is a 2009 repaint of a 2002 mural. It continues to feature Máıre Drumm, Maıréad Farrell and (in the centre) Countess Markievicz outside the GPO, but “Sınn Féın” has disappeared from behind Drumm and there is now only one binlid banger.

The mural is above the Sınn Féın Trade Union Department mural.

“We dont want the past”. A chronicle of the Troubles in Ardoyne: Orange marches, IRA shows of strength, rioting, plastic bullets, the blanket protest, funerals, vigilantism, Holy Cross.

Three close-ups (from 2014) are included below:
Both the satellite dish and the lodge-member in the board sport an orange collar(ette).
A soldier (or possibly a paramilitary) with a rifle and gas-mask  squats against a wall while another stands behind him with a baton.
Rioters under the word “freedom” on a wall and a soldier with plastic bullets. 

For the mural when new, see J1908. The board began life in colour, but, as can be seen from the wide shot below, has now faded mostly to black and white.

The apocryphal book of the Bible ‘Ecclesiasticus’ reads, “their bodies are buried in peace, but their name liveth for evermore” (44:14). The last clause is here applied to 910,000 “British empire casualties” from the Great War, including the Ulster Volunteers and Young Citizen Volunteers raised by “Sir Edward Carson” (here looking like Al Capone) which became the 36th (Ulster) Division and particularly the Royal Irish Rifles and fought at the Somme 1916.
