Seamus Costello fought for the IRA during the Border Campaign and was interned in the Curragh for two years. He stayed with the Officials during the split, but was driven out in 1974 and formed the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) and the INLA. He was shot in 1977. (WP)

Footballer Billy Simpson moved from Linfield to Rangers in 1950 and over the course of nine years and 239 appearances scored 163 goals. He also scored the winner for Northern Ireland against England in 1957. Simpson died in January of this year (2017) and is remembered by this board outside the Supporters’ Club in Barrington Street, south Belfast. Other boards include a celebration of Rangers’ European Cup Winners’ Cup win in 1972 over Dynamo Moscow in Camp Nou, Barcelona.

The words of Wilfrid Spender, Plymouth-born newspaper manager, quartermaster of the Ulster Volunteers, general staff officer of the 36th (Ulster) Division, winner of the Military Cross for actions at Thiepval, and Cabinet Secretary of the new “Northern Ireland” in 1921.

Whitehead artist Janet Crymble “designed & created this new collage in Ballyclare, featuring south Antrim sporting heroes past and present: Kyle McCallan, Steve McCooke, Paddy McNair, Jimmy Todd, Gary Longwell, Ronnie Lamont, Henry Turkington, William Cowan, William Thompson, Johnston Todd, Willie John McBride. John Reid from the NIHE – which sponsored the mural – has an image from the launch of local children posing with the piece.

We go beyond the North for today’s post: November 2014 protests over water charges (and austerity measures in general) in Tallaght, Dublin blocked in Deputy Prime Minister Joan Bruton’s car for 2.5 hours (some video | broader account). A teenager was convicted of false imprisonment but conditionally discharged in 2016 (Irish Times). The placard shown above relates to the trial of a first group of (adult) protesters, including TD Paul Murphy, at the end of June, 2017 which ended in their acquittal – which led to an internal inquiry by Gardaí of their handling of the case. Yesterday, charges were dropped against the remaining accused. For yesterday’s events see journal.ie; for a timeline, see the JobstownNotGuilty site.

UDA members John Fulton and were Stephen Goatley were killed together in the Alexandra Bar on York Road (close to the Mervue Street location of this memorial) by the UVF as part of a UDA-UVF feud in 1975. The poppy is more often associated with the Ulster Volunteers (of WWI) and the UVF.
