Stop Tory Cuts

2014-09-28 StopToryCuts+

The (UK) Conservative Party has proposed a series of cuts, including a freeze of child benefit, income support, tax credits, dole, and housing benefit. These are opposed by various parties and advocacy groups in both Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The mural above is on the Divis Street international wall, while Black Mountain/Slıabh Dubh currently carries the same message: . Protest rallies were held today (2014-10-11) in both Belfast and Dublin.

Always Avoid Violence

2014-09-06 LetNoManPalestine+

“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him”. In a sermon on November 4th, 1956 (and repeated on other occasions), Martin Luther King, Jr. imagined a letter from Paul to the Christians of America, expressing concern for spiritual life in a capitalist society and appealing for desegregation of society using non-violent methods: “the weapon of love”, keeping in mind “that you are merely seeking justice for him as well as yourself”.

Click for audio – the remark quoted occurs at the 3 minute mark of section 4 (archive.org) | Text (1958) – see page 7 (= 344)

Always British

Cluan Place is a single street in east Belfast separated from (nationalist) Short Strand by a “peace” line. For a history of Cluan Place, see Out Of The Ashes. “5 people shot – houses burnt – houses bombed. 20 families intimidated out by Sinn Fein/IRA. Still loyalist. No surrender.”

The mural – to make the point that Northern Ireland is British – features an unusual combination of Union Flag and Ulster Banner.

Sınn Féın Trade Union Dept

Fifteen years after painting, the Rockmount Street mural of Connolly and Liberty Hall is showing its age. Previously seen in 2006.

Women In Struggle

“Generations shall remember them and call them blessed.” This is a 2009 repaint of a 2002 mural. It continues to feature Máıre Drumm, Maıréad Farrell and (in the centre) Countess Markievicz outside the GPO, but “Sınn Féın” has disappeared from behind Drumm and there is now only one binlid banger.

The mural is above the Sınn Féın Trade Union Department mural.

The People’s President

Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness was nominated by the party to stand for President Of Ireland. He garnered 13.7% of first preference votes and finished third to winner Michael D. Higgins (WP). For the hunger strikers metalwork, see M03118.

…. And Short Strand Too!

“Dublin, Belfast, Cork And Donegal” was a Sınn Féın media slogan in 2011, borrowing a line from (the song) On The One Road (here’s a Wolfe Tones rendition) and touting the fact that its candidates stand for election in both the Republic and Northern Ireland.
