October 23rd marks the anniversary of the bombing of Frizzell’s fishmongers on the Shankill Road, above which the Shankill UDA and LPA had their headquarters. The bomb exploded prematurely, killing nine people, including the owner and three members of his family, and one of the IRA bombers (also memorialized, by a plaque in Ardoyne), and injuring 57 others. The meeting whose attendees were the intended target had ended early. The memorial includes a cross of poppies and an engraving of the (old) exterior – the memorial is on the wall of the new building (shown below), the old one having collapsed as a result of the bomb. Mural in Newtownards to the Ulster Volunteer Force and Young Citizen Volunteers of the first world war shows two soldiers bent in reflection against an orange and red background, suggesting sunrise/sunset. “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

Close-ups of the wall to the left (featuring lines from Binyon’s For The Fallen) and the plaque in the middle can be found below.

“Liberté, égalité, fraternité”. The United Irishmen of 1798 had been inspired by the revolutions in both the United States and France, and France attempted without success to send troops to Ireland in 1796 and 1798 (Irish History). “It is new strung and shall be heard” – this style of harp is called a Maid Of Erin harp.

Painted by Andrea Redmond in South Link, Andersonstown, Belfast, for the 200th anniversary of the rebellion. Also new for the 200th anniversary is the stone below in the nearby memorial garden outside the PD. “Who fears to speak of 98? This plaque was erected to the memory of the United Irishmen who gave their lives for Irish freedom; also all those who died as a result of the Great Hunger. ‘These are the times that try men’s souls’ [Thomas Paine] ‘The rich always betray the poor’ – Henry Joy McCracken.”

Morris – Dolan

Above is a new plaque (unveiled August 11, 2013) in Etna Drive/Corán An Ardghleanna (in Ard Eoın) to Seamus Morris and Peter Nolan, who were shot by the Protestant Action Force (UVF) twenty-five years ago, in August 1988. It reads “Brutally murdered for their faith …  by loyalist death squad aided by British crown forces. Never forgotten by family and friends.”

Thomas “Bootsey” Begley died when a bomb he was carrying into a fish shop on the Shankill Road exploded. The bomb killed Begley and nine others. The plaque above was unveiled in Ardoyne on October 20th, 2013 – twenty years after the event – to protests from relatives of the deceased (BBC-NI).

Anti-Racism World Cup

A second anti-fascist, and cross-community, piece has gone up on Northumberland Street. This one commemorates the deaths of Dick O’Neill and William Beattie who died fighting the fascists in the Spanish Civil War. O’Neill died at Jarama and Beattie at Brunete, both outside Madrid, in 1937.

As can be seen from the third image, below, the piece is immediately to the right of the Frederick Douglass mural.

In Defence Of The Woodvale

As mentioned in UDU-WDA-UDA-UFF, the end wall of Columbia Street was knocked down, taking with it a former Duke Elliott/UDA mural, which has now been replaced with boards (rather than murals) commemorating the history of the UDA and Elliott. Elliott lived one street over, in Leopold Street (WP). He was killed in 1972, at age 28, in a dispute with other UDA members.

Music – Light In Darkness

A recently installed plaque to Carl Gilbert Hardebeck in the vestibule of Holy Family Church, Limestone Rd. Of German and Welsh extraction, born in London, and blind from an early age, he came to Belfast when he was 24. He learned Irish and began collecting Irish music. Hardebeck believed that if there was music in hell it was the bagpipes!

Eugene Dunphy, who has made a film on Hardebeck, spoke at the unveiling, and the brothers Mac Maoláın, retired priests Breandán and Caoımhín, unveiled the plaque. The unveiling ceremony, including performance of a Hardebeck piece, is documented in the video below. “This memorable [sic] plague [sic] is dedicated to the 1st victim of the present troubles, Sammy McLarnon, RIP, who was brutally murdered in his own home at 37 Herbert St by the RUC on 15th Aug., 1969.” For more, see this Irish Times article about a 1999 community inquest.

On the wider wall is the graffito “Cara don’t represent me”.

Anti-drugs board in the Tullycarnet estate. In both its title and various elements, the board references the television show Shameless, which was set on a Manchester housing estate and ended on May 28, 2013, after eleven seasons (WP). Black-and-white images from the estate, and other Belfast landmarks, are featured at the top.

The plaque below reads: Shameful mural. This mural was officially unveiled on 15th June 2009 by First Minister Peter Robinson. This mural was created by young people from Tullycarnet to highlight that drug and alcohol use should not be normalized by communities.
